Google unveils AI-powered scam detection in Messages and live-location sharing in Find My Device

With a new AI-powered fraud detection tool in Google texts, Google is improving user security by instantly identifying questionable texts. This function, which was announced on March 4, is now being rolled out in the US, UK, and Canada, with plans to expand to additional countries.

AI scam detection in Google Messages

In order to identify fraud tendencies and provide users with a “Likely Scam” label when a message seems suspect, Google communications will now analyze SMS, MMS, and RCS communications. These communications can then be easily dismissed, reported, or blocked by users. Google does not keep or read messages because all processing takes place on the device to protect privacy.

If they’d want, users may also turn off fraud detection in Google Messages’ Spam Protection settings.

Live location sharing in find my device

Google has added live location sharing to the Find My Device app in addition to fraud detection. This enables users to share their current position with trusted friends for safer and more convenient meetings, much to capabilities on Apple’s Find My and WhatsApp.

Key features of Google’s live location sharing:

Control who sees your location and for how long
Seamless integration across different Android devices
Enhanced security for tracking loved ones safely

More Android features on the way

In the upcoming weeks, Google has alluded to more security and convenience enhancements for Android users. These capabilities complement Google’s larger effort to improve digital safety and give its users a more seamless, connected experience.
