Google is preparing to improve the browsing experience on Chrome for Android by introducing a redesigned notification permission interface. The new update is aimed at reducing notification prompt fatigue and making permission requests less disruptive for users. The redesigned interface will begin rolling out with Chrome 155.
According to a post on the Chrome for Developers blog, the updated notification permission UI is designed to reduce interruptions while maintaining user understanding. Google said the new design has “less intrusive Notification UI has similar comprehension to the previous version, but significantly lower user friction”. The company believes the change will help users make informed decisions about website notifications without disrupting their browsing.
As part of the update, Chrome will include a dedicated notification subscription option within the Site Controls menu. This will allow users who ignore or dismiss a notification request when a webpage first loads to subscribe later through the Site Controls interface, giving them greater flexibility.
Google also confirmed that the new notification prompt will automatically expire if users do not respond. Because of this change, developers may need to update code that checks whether notification permission has been granted.
The company has advised developers to request notification permissions only when they are relevant to what users are doing. For example, an e-commerce website can ask for delivery updates after an order is placed, a news website can offer topic alerts after users read multiple related articles, and a travel website can request permission for fare alerts after a flight search.
Google added that Chrome 150 for Android is currently available through the Play Store, while the redesigned notification experience is scheduled to arrive with Chrome 155.
