Gemini arrives on Mac with AI-built foundation and smarter desktop features

Marking a new step in desktop AI integration, Google has introduced the Gemini app for Mac users globally. The release brings native AI assistance directly to macOS, offering faster access and deeper workflow integration.

The announcement gained attention after Sundar Pichai revealed that the app was developed using the company’s in-house AI coding tool, Antigravity. This system uses autonomous agents to plan, write, and test software, similar to tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. It marks one of the first instances where the company has openly credited AI for building a production-ready application.

“Introducing Gemini on Mac. It’s the first time we’re bringing the @Geminiapp to desktop. The team built this initial release with @Antigravity, and it went from an idea to a native Swift app prototype in a few days. More features on the way!” Pichai wrote in a post on X.

The Gemini Mac app is designed to integrate seamlessly into daily workflows. Users can activate it instantly using the “Option + Space” keyboard shortcut, allowing quick access without switching tabs. This enables tasks such as verifying data, building formulas, or getting instant assistance while working.

A key feature of the app is its ability to share the active window, providing contextual support in real time. “Whether you’re drafting a market report and need to verify a date or building a budget in a spreadsheet and need the right formula, you can get an answer and get right back to work,” the company said in a blog post.

The app also supports creative functions. Users can generate images using Nano Banana and create videos with Veo directly from their desktop.

“We’re building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant, with more news to share in the coming months,” the company added.

The app is rolling out globally for macOS users running version 15 or above and can be downloaded from the Gemini website.

The launch comes as Google and Apple continue their partnership to integrate Gemini models into future versions of Siri and other Apple Intelligence features.
