Google brings audio-focused Meet experience to Android Auto for safer in-car communication

In a step towards improving in-car connectivity, Google has introduced support for its Meet platform on Android Auto, allowing users to join meetings and make calls directly from their vehicle’s display.

The feature is designed with an audio-first approach to reduce distractions while driving. It follows the company’s recent rollout of Meet support on Apple CarPlay.

With this update, users can connect their smartphone to a compatible car via Bluetooth or USB and access the Meet app on the dashboard screen. They can join scheduled meetings or call recent contacts using a simplified interface. Meetings skip the pre-call screen, and video remains off by default, with audio played through the car’s speakers.

Users can check upcoming meetings under a Scheduled tab and join with a single tap. The History tab allows access to recent calls and contacts. During meetings, basic controls such as mute, unmute, and ending calls are available. Incoming calls also appear on the display, allowing users to accept or decline them easily.

The experience is designed to remain consistent between phone and car. Audio automatically switches between devices when Android Auto is connected or disconnected. Users may also receive alerts for events like recordings, transcriptions, or when Gemini is in use. In cases such as waiting rooms or breakout sessions, status updates are shown, and users are moved automatically when needed.

Google has limited several features to ensure safety. Video is not supported, and users cannot view presentations or use tools like chat, polls, Q&A, or hand-raise options. Work profile accounts are also not supported for viewing scheduled meetings or call history. Additionally, hosts cannot manage participants from the car display.

The system uses a safe driving mode with minimal on-screen elements to reduce distractions. For full functionality, users are required to park their vehicle and use the Meet app on their phone.
