A new step toward the future of transportation has begun in France, where the world’s first highway that charges electric vehicles wirelessly while they are in motion has been activated. The 1.5 kilometre stretch, located near the A10 motorway outside Paris, can charge buses, cars and heavy trucks as they drive without needing to stop for charging.
The system has been verified by independent laboratories from Gustave Eiffel University. It delivers more than 200 kW of continuous power and can peak at up to 300 kW. This is similar to the output levels of some of the fastest charging stations globally, including high speed public chargers.
The road works using copper coils installed under the asphalt. These coils generate a magnetic field that transfers power to electric vehicles equipped with special receivers. The process is similar to wireless charging seen in smartphones, except on a much larger scale. Because the system depends on magnetic induction, it continues to work effectively in rain, ice and snow.
The high charging efficiency means vehicles may be able to travel longer distances without needing large or heavy battery packs. It could reduce the need for frequent charging stops and allow lighter, more affordable electric vehicle designs in the future.
Early testing reported that the self charging road added significant driving range in just a few minutes, addressing the range limitations that often slow the adoption of electric vehicles.
The charging strip has additional advantages since its components are built inside the road surface, meaning there are no exposed moving parts that could wear out. The system has been developed by Electreon and supports the French Ministry of Transport’s goal of creating about 9,000 kilometres of wireless charging roads across the country by 2035.
This development marks a major step forward in improving convenience and efficiency for electric vehicle users and may shape how future highways are built worldwide.
