In a powerful shift that echoes ambition and evolution, Fidji Simo, the dynamic force behind Instacart’s rise, has announced she will soon step into her new role as Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI Applications. Through a heartfelt message shared on LinkedIn, Simo unveiled this career transition, reflecting on both her journey and the path ahead.
“I want to share an important update with you that I will be leaving Instacart in the coming months to take on a new role as CEO of OpenAI Applications, leading the product, business, and other company functions,” she wrote in an email to her team, later posted online.
Simo’s admiration for artificial intelligence has been no secret. In her note, she expressed, “At the same time, you all know my passion for AI generally and in particular for the potential it has to cure diseases—the ability to lead such an important part of our collective future was a hard opportunity to pass up.”
This transition, however, won’t be immediate. She assured her team that she will remain CEO for a few more months, helping the company navigate the handover. Instacart’s board has already been engaged in succession planning, and her successor is expected to emerge from the current leadership team. “I’ll also stay on as Chair of the Board to support our next CEO,” she confirmed, emphasizing continuity and stability.
Simo, who has guided Instacart for over four years and previously held leadership roles at Facebook and Shopify, is known for her strategic vision and product expertise.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman also shared his excitement via a social media post: “So excited that Fidji Simo is joining OpenAI in a new role: CEO of Applications, reporting to me. I’ll remain CEO of OpenAI, but in this new configuration, I’ll be able to increase my focus on research, compute, and safety. These are critical as we approach superintelligence.”
As Simo prepares to dive deeper into the transformative world of AI, her leadership signals a new chapter for OpenAI’s product and business evolution—one where innovation meets purpose, and ambition meets humanity.
