Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) subscribers may soon be able to withdraw their provident fund savings directly through UPI, with testing of the new facility already completed, according to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
The initiative is part of EPFO’s broader effort to improve service delivery and provide faster access to funds for its more than 7 crore members. Under the new system, eligible members will be able to view the amount available for withdrawal, authenticate the transaction using their UPI PIN, and receive the funds dire’ctly into their linked bank accounts.
The move is expected to significantly reduce waiting times. Currently, members must submit withdrawal claims, but under EPFO’s auto-settlement mechanism, eligible claims are processed electronically within 3 days without manual intervention. The auto-settlement limit has already been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, covering withdrawals for purposes such as education, marriage, housing, and medical needs.
EPFO is also preparing to launch member services on WhatsApp. Users will be able to initiate interactions by sending a “Hello” message to EPFO’s verified WhatsApp number. The service will support multiple regional languages and provide assistance for checking PF balances, viewing the last 5 transactions, tracking claim status, and accessing other services.
Initially, WhatsApp support will focus on resolving issues related to PMVBRY beneficiaries, Aadhaar authentication through UIDAI’s Face Authentication Technology (FAT), and activation of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
The organization has also reported a significant reduction in pending legal cases. Consumer court cases declined from 4,936 on April 1, 2024, to 2,646 on March 31, 2026. Overall litigation cases fell from 31,036 on April 1, 2025, to 27,639 on April 1, 2026.
“This marks the lowest ever level of litigation pendency in EPFO,” the minister said.
EPFO also reduced cases pending for more than 10 years from 8,539 to 4,665, while a special campaign during February-March 2026 helped dispose of 353 appeals pending before Central Government Industrial Tribunals.
