Rising cybercrime complaints and a shortage of investigation staff have prompted the Tamil Nadu Police Department to seek a major upgrade for several cybercrime police stations, including the Coimbatore city cybercrime unit. The proposal aims to strengthen the state’s ability to handle the growing volume of cybercrime cases.
Coimbatore City Commissioner of Police N. Kannan said the city’s cybercrime police station has been recommended for conversion into a “heavy station”. Under this category, the station would have a sanctioned strength of 80 personnel.
At present, the Coimbatore city cybercrime station has only 1 Inspector and 10 personnel. In comparison, a police station classified as a “light” station has a sanctioned strength of 30 personnel, while a “medium” station has 50 personnel.
Police data shows that the cybercrime station has received around 6,000 complaints so far in 2026. Of these, 5,000 were related to financial fraud, including fraudulent transactions and online cheating. Among the financial crime complaints, 4,000 involved losses of more than ₹1 lakh. The station has registered a little over 70 First Information Reports (FIRs) this year.
The growing workload follows a sharp rise in cybercrime cases recorded last year. Official data shows that residents of Coimbatore city lost ₹87.16 crore to various forms of cybercrime in 2025. During the same period, the cybercrime station received 9,960 complaints, including 7,779 cases related to fraudulent financial transactions and online cheating.
The proposed upgrade is expected to improve the station’s investigation capacity and help police respond more effectively to the increasing number of cybercrime complaints.
