OpenAI’s Codex is evolving from a developer-focused coding assistant into a broader productivity platform, with growing adoption among professionals across a wide range of industries.
According to a new report titled The Next Era of Knowledge Work, Codex now has more than 5 million weekly active users, representing growth of over 6x since the launch of its desktop application in February. While software developers continue to make up the largest share of users, knowledge workers now account for approximately 20% of the user base and are expanding at more than 3x the pace of developers.
The report highlights a shift in how professionals are using AI tools. Beyond coding, users are increasingly relying on Codex to create reports, spreadsheets, presentations, contracts, and other business documents. The platform is also being used for research, data analysis, workflow automation, and building lightweight internal tools that previously required technical or engineering support.
Among knowledge workers, the fastest-growing use cases include data analysis, research, and the creation of knowledge-based assets. Users are also increasingly running multiple tasks simultaneously, allowing them to analyze information, generate content, and automate workflows in parallel.
OpenAI suggests that this ability to manage several workstreams at once could significantly increase workplace productivity. By reducing routine tasks and accelerating project execution, AI tools such as Codex may enable professionals to take on larger responsibilities, expand the scope of their roles, and potentially advance more quickly in their careers.
The report also indicates that adoption patterns are consistent across industries. Organizations are using Codex to reduce operational friction, locate information across disconnected systems, coordinate work between teams, generate high-quality deliverables, and streamline review and approval processes.
As AI continues to move beyond software development, the findings suggest that productivity tools are becoming increasingly integrated into everyday knowledge work, helping professionals automate repetitive tasks and focus on higher-value activities.
