A cybercrime investigation in Bihar has led the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to a SIM card retailer in Kujang, Odisha. The agency arrested the retailer on Friday after tracing SIM cards allegedly used in the fraud.
The accused, Rajesh Nayak, 40, is a resident of Pariang village under Kujang police limits. He owns Nayak Airtel Enterprise, a SIM card retail outlet at Kujang canal market.
According to police sources, the CBI was investigating a cybercrime case in Bihar when it found that some SIM cards allegedly used in the fraud had been activated in Odisha. Further investigation to identify their source led the agency to Kujang.
A joint CBI team from Delhi and Bihar, accompanied by Kujang police, raided Nayak Airtel Enterprise. The officials reportedly seized more than 400 SIM cards along with important documents during the operation.
Nayak allegedly attempted to flee after learning that the raiding team was from the CBI. Police said he asked for permission to use the toilet but allegedly tried to escape. CBI officials later caught him after a brief chase.
During the investigation, officials reportedly found that around 58 SIM cards allegedly linked to the Bihar cybercrime case had been activated from Nayak’s shop. Police sources said the CBI operation at the outlet continued from around 10 am to 8 pm.
Tirtol SDPO Ajay Das confirmed that the CBI team had raided the SIM card retailer’s shop. However, he said the agency’s officials did not inform the local police about the nature of the alleged crime or the offence being investigated.
