Carlyle-backed initiative looks to Norway’s renewable energy to power future data centers

Amid rising demand for AI infrastructure, a venture backed by The Carlyle Group co-founder Bill Conway is focusing on Norway’s fjord regions to tap into clean hydropower and build next-generation data center capacity.

The initiative, launched with data center developer Byrne Murphy, aims to acquire land and secure renewable energy resources in Norway. These sites will then be packaged as ready-to-deploy infrastructure for data center operators and technology companies.

The strategy leverages Norway’s natural strengths, including abundant hydropower and favorable geography, making it an attractive destination for sustainable, large-scale data center development. These advantages are becoming critical as AI workloads continue to drive significant global energy demand.

The move reflects a broader trend of investors securing infrastructure assets early in the AI growth cycle. By locking in land, permits, and power agreements, the venture aims to address a key industry challenge—the shortage of energy-secure, deployment-ready data center sites.

Norway, along with other Nordic regions, is emerging as a major hub for data centers due to its renewable energy capacity and cooler climate, which helps reduce operating costs. Demand for power in the region is expected to rise sharply as cloud computing and AI adoption continue to expand.

This development highlights a shift in infrastructure investment toward sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, as companies balance rapid computing scale with environmental and regulatory considerations.
