Cybercrime in Bihar shows a notable pattern, with personal grievances and anger accounting for a disproportionately large share of cases recorded across India, even as financial fraud remains the state’s leading cybercrime category.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) Crime in India 2024 report, Bihar recorded 3,771 cybercrime cases linked to fraud in 2024. Another 1,167 cases were attributed to “personal revenge”, while 842 were linked to emotional motives such as anger.
The national figures reveal a significant difference. Of the 1,850 cybercrime cases recorded across India under “personal revenge”, 1,167 came from Bihar, accounting for more than 63% of the total. Bihar also contributed 842 of the 1,336 cases nationwide associated with emotional motives such as anger.
However, the state’s share of fraud-related cybercrime was much smaller. Its 3,771 cases represented approximately 5% of the 73,987 fraud-related cybercrimes reported across India in 2024.
These figures highlight a clear contrast. Financial fraud remains the largest cybercrime category in Bihar in terms of case numbers, but the state accounts for an unusually high proportion of reported cybercrimes driven by personal revenge and anger.
The NCRB statistics do not establish the reasons behind this difference. However, they raise questions about why Bihar contributes such a large share of India’s recorded cybercrime cases linked to personal grievances rather than financial gain.
