In a move aimed at improving emergency response, Bengaluru has introduced India’s first AI-powered 112 helpline capable of communicating in over 10 languages. The upgrade is part of the Namma 112 emergency response system and is designed to make it easier for people to seek help in their preferred language.
The new system focuses on removing language barriers during emergencies. It currently supports multiple languages, including Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, and even Spanish, reflecting the city’s diverse population.
A key feature of the 112 helpline AI system is its ability to instantly identify the caller’s language. Every day, around 200 staff members manage up to 10000 calls. If a caller speaks a language unfamiliar to the team, the AI quickly detects it and gathers essential information, ensuring that assistance is dispatched without delay.
Officials believe this technology will help reduce response times and improve efficiency in emergency situations. The initiative is also expected to act as a model for other cities across India looking to upgrade their public safety systems.
Further expansion is already being considered, with more languages, including Japanese, likely to be added in the future.
