AI boom pushes ASML to expand chipmaking machine output

Amid a surge in artificial intelligence-driven computing needs, ASML is expanding production of its advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines. The move highlights the company’s critical role in the global semiconductor supply chain as chipmakers push to build more powerful processors for AI workloads.

ASML plans to produce at least 60 EUV systems in 2026, up from 48 units delivered in the previous year. The company is also preparing to further increase output to around 80 systems annually in the near future, signalling strong long-term demand for its technology.

EUV lithography machines are essential for manufacturing advanced semiconductors used in AI, high-performance computing and data centres. As global technology firms invest heavily in AI infrastructure, demand for these machines has surged. Companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon are collectively planning investments worth hundreds of billions of dollars in AI-related capital expenditure.

Along with increasing production, ASML is also focusing on improving machine efficiency. Enhancements in throughput are helping chipmakers process more wafers per hour, addressing supply constraints and supporting rising industry demand. This dual focus on capacity and performance is key as AI-driven requirements continue to outpace supply.

The expansion reflects a broader shift in the semiconductor industry, where AI is driving rapid scaling of manufacturing capabilities. With a near-monopoly in EUV technology, ASML remains central to enabling next-generation chips and is positioned at the core of the global AI boom.
