Apple has moved a step closer to launching its AI services in China after its Apple Intelligence platform was registered with the country’s cyberspace regulator. The registration is expected to strengthen Apple’s position in the Chinese market, where users have been waiting for the rollout of Apple Intelligence.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Apple Intelligence will include AI capabilities developed by Baidu and Alibaba. The source shared the information on condition of anonymity. Apple did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
Alibaba said in a statement to a news agency that its Qwen AI model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence across Apple’s iPhone (iOS), iPad (iPadOS), Mac (macOS), and Vision Pro (visionOS) operating systems in China.
A Baidu spokesperson also confirmed that the company is working with Apple to develop Apple Intelligence features for iPhone users in China.
The cyberspace regulator’s statement did not specify a launch date for Apple Intelligence in China. Meanwhile, Apple reported a 24.4% year-on-year increase in its China shipments during the 2nd quarter.
In a separate development, ZTE’s Nubia-Doubao smartphone model was also registered with the cyberspace regulator. Nubia is a smartphone brand owned by ZTE and works with ByteDance to develop the AI-focused Doubao smartphone.
