A shift in display technology could be on the horizon for Apple’s mid-range tablets. Apple is reportedly planning to introduce an OLED display to the iPad Air in 2027, marking a major upgrade in its lineup.
According to a report citing industry sources, the company is expected to launch the OLED iPad Air in the first half of 2027, likely between March and May. Samsung Display is anticipated to supply the panels and may begin mass production in late 2026 or early 2027 to support the timeline.
This move is part of Apple’s broader strategy to expand OLED technology across its tablet range. The iPad Pro transitioned to OLED in 2024, and the iPad Mini is also expected to adopt the technology soon. If implemented, the standard iPad would remain the only model using an LCD panel.
The report suggests that the iPad Air will feature a cost-efficient OLED setup. It is expected to include a single-stack emissive layer, LTPS TFT technology, and a hybrid substrate. This approach is aimed at controlling production costs and preventing a significant price increase.
The iPad Air typically sells in higher volumes compared to the Pro models. As a result, Apple is likely focusing on balancing improved display quality with affordability. This strategy follows reports that the OLED iPad Pro faced weaker demand, partly due to its higher pricing.
Currently, Samsung Display and LG Display share OLED panel supply for the iPad Pro. However, Samsung is expected to take a leading role in supplying panels for upcoming devices, including the iPad Air, iPad Mini, and future MacBook Pro models.
Market forecasts indicate strong growth in OLED tablet demand in the coming years, with shipments expected to rise steadily through 2027. Apple is likely to play a significant role in driving this demand as it expands OLED adoption across its devices.
While these developments are based on supply chain insights and not officially confirmed, multiple reports point to 2027 as the earliest possible launch window for an OLED iPad Air.
