Apple is reportedly planning to expand the capabilities of its future smart glasses and augmented reality headsets by introducing health and fitness tracking features. The move is expected to strengthen the company’s wearable ecosystem, although these features are not likely to arrive with the first generation of Apple smart glasses, which are expected to launch in 2027.
According to a report, Apple had originally planned to introduce health and fitness tracking with the Apple Vision Pro, which was launched in 2023 as the company’s first augmented reality headset. The company was also reportedly working on a version of Apple Fitness+ designed for Vision Pro, allowing users to wear the headset during workouts while tracking body movements and fitness metrics.
However, They reportedly dropped these plans because of “technological hurdles” and the headset’s increased weight, making it less suitable for fitness-focused use.
For its future smart glasses, Apple is said to be exploring a different approach. The wearable is expected to include a “range of sensors” that can capture health, fitness, and movement-related data while maintaining a lightweight design. The company is currently evaluating different ways to integrate these capabilities into the smaller form factor.
The report also noted that it’s Vision Products Group is hiring a “strategic product design leader,” signalling continued investment in its smart glasses and headset roadmap.
It’s future smart eyewear is expected to work alongside existing products such as AirPods, which recently gained hearing aid capabilities, and the Apple Watch, which already offers several health and fitness tracking features. Together, these devices could create a more connected wearable experience and strengthen it’s position against competitors such as Meta.
In a separate development, another report recently claimed that Apple has delayed the launch of its smart glasses from the second half of 2026 to the first half of 2027. The company is now expected to introduce the wearable during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote in June 2027, giving developers additional time to build and test applications before the product reaches the market.
