Apple CarPlay set to open voice access to third party AI assistants

Apple is preparing a major change to how voice assistance works inside cars, with plans to allow third party AI chatbots on CarPlay. The update would end Siri’s long standing position as the only voice assistant available through Apple’s in car system.

According to a report, Apple is working on opening CarPlay to rival AI services from companies such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. Since its launch, CarPlay has limited voice commands and assistance to Siri alone. Under the new approach, drivers will be able to access advanced AI tools alongside Apple’s own assistant while using the vehicle interface.

Once rolled out, the update will allow voice based interaction with AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. These tools are expected to handle more complex requests than Siri, including detailed restaurant suggestions, long email summaries and travel planning. The goal is to offer richer responses while allowing drivers to keep their attention on the road.

Industry analysts say the move reflects rising demand from iPhone users who want more powerful AI features while driving. Until now, many users relied on indirect methods such as mobile apps or widgets to access these tools. While Apple is opening CarPlay to competitors, key limits will remain. Drivers will not be able to replace the steering wheel Siri button or change the “Siri” wake word. Instead, users must open a third party app from the CarPlay dashboard, after which developers can trigger “voice mode” automatically for hands free use.

The change may also pressure carmakers that have invested heavily in their own voice assistants, as drivers increasingly prefer familiar AI tools from their phones. The new functionality is expected to arrive in the coming months through an upcoming iOS update. Apple has not officially commented on the reports.
