Amazon expands AI strategy with dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering organisation

As businesses move from experimenting with AI to deploying it across daily operations, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a $1 billion investment to build a dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organisation. The initiative is designed to help enterprises integrate AI into their existing systems more efficiently.

AWS said the new internal organisation will focus on deploying engineers directly within customer teams to accelerate AI implementation. The move follows similar efforts by OpenAI and Anthropic, which introduced dedicated FDE-focused service companies earlier this year.

Forward Deployed Engineers work closely with customers to integrate AI tools into existing business processes, ensuring they deliver maximum value. AWS Vice President of Frontier AI Engineering and Services Francesca Vasquez said customers are increasingly looking to rebuild business operations using agentic AI and require engineers who can work alongside their internal teams.

According to AWS, each customer engagement will typically involve 5 to 6 engineers, while the company plans to seed the new organisation with thousands of FDE professionals. These teams will collaborate with business, engineering, and security departments to build production-ready AI systems using customer data, governance frameworks, and existing processes.

Amazon Web Services said its approach focuses on delivering measurable business outcomes instead of charging based on billable hours. The company also aims to leave customers with the skills and engineering capabilities needed to independently manage AI systems after deployment.

The FDE teams are already supporting organisations including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, Ricoh, Southwest Airlines, and the NFL.

The demand for FDE talent is also growing across the industry. While AWS has created an internal engineering organisation, OpenAI and Anthropic have established separate service companies for similar work, and Google is also expanding its FDE hiring to support enterprise AI adoption.

Salary packages for these specialised roles remain highly competitive. Google Cloud offers base salaries ranging from $153,000 (around ₹1.46 crore) to $222,000 (around ₹2.12 crore), while OpenAI offers between $198,000 (around ₹1.89 crore) and $335,000 (around ₹3.20 crore) for similar US-based positions.
