Amid rapid technological change in the medical field, the importance of human connection continues to stand strong. President Droupadi Murmu highlighted this balance while addressing graduating students at the first convocation of AIIMS Rajkot.
Speaking at the event, the President said that advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital health are transforming modern medicine. “Today, Artificial Intelligence, robotics and digital health services have rapidly changed the face of the medical world,” Murmu said.
She encouraged young doctors to adopt these technologies to improve their knowledge and deliver better treatment outcomes. However, she stressed that technology cannot replace the human side of healthcare. “Your gentle words, a reassuring smile, and the willingness to listen to a patientas concerns can often prove far more effective than medication alone,” she said, adding that medicine is a service to humanity, not just a profession.
Murmu also urged institutions like AIIMS Rajkot to align their growth with regional healthcare needs. She highlighted the importance of focusing on maternal and child health, as well as genetic conditions like sickle cell anaemia, especially in rural and tribal areas.
She expressed confidence that the institute will prioritise these areas and work towards delivering accessible, high-quality, and affordable tertiary healthcare. The President noted that AIIMS institutions play a key role in education, patient care, research, and policy-making, contributing significantly to strengthening India’s healthcare system.
“AIIMS Rajkot is relatively a new institution. It has a long journey ahead and should chart a clear roadmap focusing on good governance, transparency and optimal use of resources to achieve excellence in education, research and healthcare delivery,” she said.
Addressing students, Murmu reminded them of their responsibility as “custodians of public health and uphold the trust society places in doctors”. She added, “The white coat you wear symbolises immense trust. It is your responsibility to preserve it.”
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, she urged them to dedicate themselves to service. “Professional competence is important, but moral integrity is even more crucial,” she said.
During the ceremony, 49 MBBS students from the 2020 batch received their degrees, along with 1 post-doctoral certificate in virology.
