The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has shared a new update on its proposed seventy kilometre Integrated Tunnel Road Network, confirming that the Detailed Project Report is now under preparation. The authority has also invited tenders to appoint consultants who will design the project blueprint.
The ambitious underground network is planned to connect key parts of the city, including the Mumbai Coastal Road, the BKC bullet train terminal and Terminal 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Future links to the Eastern and Western Expressways and north south corridors are also being considered. The main goal of the project is to ease traffic congestion and create smooth connectivity between road, rail and air transport. It is also expected to strengthen Mumbai’s role as a major transport and commercial hub.
Reports suggest the project will be built in three phases. The first phase will include a sixteen kilometre stretch connecting Marine Drive Worli to BKC and the airport’s Terminal 2. It will also link to the upcoming Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train station. The second phase will introduce a ten kilometre east west tunnel connecting the Eastern and Western Express Highways. The third phase will create a forty four kilometre north south corridor running underground across the city.
In a parallel development, the state government has formed a high level committee to examine how metro rail agencies in the region can be integrated. Multiple agencies currently manage metro planning, construction and operations, leading to overlap and coordination issues. The government aims to bring these bodies together into a single unified metro rail entity to improve efficiency and enhance the commuter experience.
