How to set up and use passkeys on an iPhone for safer and easier sign ins

Apple is moving closer to a password free future with passkeys, a secure way to sign in to websites and apps using Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. Instead of remembering multiple passwords, you can log in with a quick authentication step. Passkeys are encrypted, stored in iCloud Keychain and synced across your Apple devices that use the same Apple ID. To use them, two factor authentication and iCloud Keychain must be enabled.

Passkeys work by creating a pair of cryptographic keys. The private key stays on your iPhone and never leaves the device, while the public key is stored by the app or website. This makes passkeys far safer than traditional passwords and protects users from phishing attempts. Supported platforms can generate passkeys automatically and store them in the Passwords section of Settings.

To create and save a passkey, open a supported website or app and go to the sign in page. If you are creating a new account, choose the sign up option. If you already have an account, sign in and open your account settings. Look for the passkey feature. When the option appears, tap Continue and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. The passkey will be saved in iCloud Keychain. If you do not see the feature, it means the service does not support passkeys yet. You can also store a passkey on a hardware security key by choosing other options.

To sign in with a passkey, open the app or website and tap the account field. A login suggestion will appear on the screen. Select it and authenticate through Face ID or Touch ID. If biometrics are not enabled, enter your device passcode. The system will use the passkey automatically, allowing you to sign in quickly without entering a password or an OTP.

You can also use your iPhone to sign in with a passkey on another device. On the non Apple device, visit the website and enter your username. Choose the option to use a passkey from a nearby device. A QR code will appear on the screen. Scan this code with your iPhone camera and authenticate. The login will complete without revealing any sensitive information.
