The state government has formed a new committee under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to explore how all metro lines across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region can be brought under one unified operating body. This move aims to simplify management and improve coordination across the expanding metro network.
According to a Government Resolution issued by the Urban Development Department, the committee will be led by the MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. It has been asked to submit its recommendations within three months. As part of its study, the team will examine global transport models such as Transport for London and the Land Transport Authority of Singapore to understand how integrated systems are managed in major cities.
At present, three different state agencies operate metro lines in the region. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation manages the Aqualine or Metro 3 and is building a new line between Wadala and the Gateway of India. The City and Industrial Development Corporation runs the Belapur to Pendhar in Navi Mumbai and is developing three more corridors. The MMRDA oversees the remaining lines that are operational or under construction in the region.
The committee will also include senior officials such as Ashwini Bhide, managing director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, Rubal Agarwal, managing director of Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation Limited, as well as representatives from CIDCO and the urban development department.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation was earlier established under the leadership of Ashwini Bhide when there were concerns about the MMRDA’s capacity to plan and execute projects. With the network now expanding rapidly, the state believes that managing all lines through a single umbrella body will streamline operations and reduce administrative complexity.
