In a significant step towards strengthening India’s semiconductor industry, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved the establishment of the ‘NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at IIT Bhubaneswar. The project, estimated at 4.95 crore, aims to enhance India’s capabilities in chip design, fabrication, and research.
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the new laboratory will be equipped with advanced machinery and software necessary for training in semiconductor design and fabrication. The facility is expected to play a key role in developing a skilled talent pool of engineers and researchers with industry-standard expertise, supporting India’s emerging semiconductor sector.
The ministry highlighted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision to make India a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing and innovation. The lab will also support the training of qualified professionals for future chip manufacturing and packaging facilities across the country.
Officials stated that the NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory will serve as a catalyst for India’s fast-growing semiconductor ecosystem and reinforce flagship initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’.
With the global semiconductor industry witnessing rapid growth, the establishment of this laboratory is expected to strengthen India’s position in the international value chain and accelerate the country’s journey towards technological self-reliance.
