India to Enable Biometric UPI Payments from October 8

India is set to enable users to approve payments on its domestic Unified Payments Interface using facial recognition and fingerprints starting October 8, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The biometric verification will use data stored under the Government of India’s Aadhaar system, one source confirmed. This marks a significant shift from the current system, which requires users to authenticate transactions using a numeric PIN.

The move follows recent guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India allowing alternative authentication methods for digital payments. It aims to make payments faster and more secure while reducing dependency on traditional PIN-based verification.

The National Payments Corporation of India, which manages UPI, plans to demonstrate the new biometric feature at the ongoing Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai, the sources added, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to comment publicly.

NPCI has not yet issued an official statement regarding the rollout.

The introduction of biometric authentication is expected to simplify UPI transactions for millions of users, enhancing convenience while strengthening security through Aadhaar-based verification.
