Perplexity’s AI-Powered Comet Browser Now Free for All Users

Perplexity has made its AI-powered Comet browser available to all users, the company announced on Thursday. Previously, access was limited to Perplexity Max subscribers or those with an invitation. The browser currently supports Windows and Mac, with mobile versions under development. Comet features a sidebar AI assistant that can summarise web content, analyse multiple pages, and perform certain agentic tasks.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas shared the news on X, stating that the browser is now generally available for everyone. Launched in July, Comet was initially exclusive to Max subscribers and later opened to Pro and free-tier users by invitation. Users can now download and use the browser directly.

The browser uses the same search engine as Perplexity’s native platform. Search queries entered in the URL bar provide familiar responses with the same formatting and layout. A standout feature is the AI assistant, accessible via a toolbar button, which automatically gathers context from all open tabs and answers questions about the content. For example, users can visit a product page on an e-commerce site and ask the assistant to find a faster shipping option.

The AI assistant also offers agentic functions. Users can ask it to schedule meetings, send emails based on the web page they are viewing, or even make purchases from e-commerce platforms. In testing, the assistant was able to locate the cheapest 43-inch smart TV and take the user directly to the checkout page.

Certain features, like making purchases, require users to provide information such as location, e-commerce login credentials, and credit card details. If the credit card is not provided, the assistant will still guide users to the checkout page to complete the payment manually.

Comet’s release marks a significant step in making AI browsing accessible to all, combining search, summarisation, and actionable AI capabilities in one platform.
