Emirates Bans Use of Power Banks Onboard from October 1

Emirates has announced new safety rules that ban the use of power banks onboard its flights, effective from Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

Under the new policy, passengers can carry one power bank under 100 watt hours in their cabin baggage, but it cannot be used during the flight. Travellers will not be allowed to charge their phones, tablets, or other devices with power banks, nor recharge the power banks themselves using the in-seat power supply.

“After a comprehensive safety review, Emirates is taking a firm and proactive stance to mitigate risk when it comes to power banks onboard. There has been a significant growth in customers using power banks in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of lithium battery related incidents onboard flights across the wider aviation industry,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline clarified that power banks must show clear capacity ratings and should only be stored in the seat pocket or under the seat, not in overhead bins. Passengers are advised to fully charge their devices before boarding, especially for long journeys, as in-seat charging ports will remain available.

Power banks are small battery packs commonly used to charge smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices. They are powered by lithium batteries, which can pose fire risks if damaged or overcharged. While global aviation authorities such as the IATA, FAA, and CAA allow power banks under 100 Wh in carry-on baggage, airlines are permitted to apply stricter rules. Some carriers allow devices up to 160 Wh with prior approval, but those exceeding this limit are strictly prohibited.

Passengers should also note that while batteries installed in devices like laptops and phones may be checked in if switched off completely, spare power banks must always remain in cabin baggage.

Several international airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways, EVA Air, and others, have recently tightened restrictions on power banks. Emirates now joins this list with one of the strictest measures, banning their use entirely during flights.
