Undersea Cable Connectivity to Position Mangaluru as Global Data Centre Hub, Says KDEM Vision Document

The Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) has outlined in its vision document that undersea cable connectivity will be a key enabler in positioning Mangaluru as a global data centre hub. The Mangaluru Cluster, covering Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Kodagu districts, has been identified as a strategic location to attract hyperscalers, cloud providers, and AI-driven enterprises.

According to the document, direct landing stations and subsea cable routes will deliver low-latency and high-capacity international bandwidth, helping Mangaluru compete globally.

Three cable route options have been proposed. The first, connecting the Middle East and Europe (Oman or UAE → Mangaluru → onward to Chennai or Singapore), will bypass congested Mumbai landing stations and provide faster routes to West Asia and Europe. The second option extends to Southeast Asia (Singapore → Colombo → Mangaluru → onward to the Middle East or Africa), offering a Bengaluru+1 backup route for hyperscalers. The third option is a regional loop linking Chennai, Kochi, and Mangaluru through terrestrial and subsea networks.

The vision document emphasises that Mangaluru, with its coastal advantage, renewable energy potential, and skilled workforce, will complement Bengaluru under the Beyond Bengaluru initiative. It aims to make the city a next-generation AI data centre hub and a resilient backup site for global capability centres.

The initiative is projected to create more than 25,000 direct and indirect jobs. This includes 8,000 in construction and infrastructure, 7,000 in IT and cloud services, 5,000 in operations and maintenance, 3,000 in renewable energy, and 2,000 in ancillary industries.

The document further envisions Mangaluru as a giga-scale data centre cluster with a planned capacity exceeding 1 GW over the next decade. It highlights a “Grid-to-Chip” strategy that integrates renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydro with advanced cooling, high-density compute, and chip-level optimisation to meet the growing demand for AI and cloud workloads.
