Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially launched BSNL’s 4G services across India, marking a major step in the country’s telecom sector. The state-owned operator has rolled out its network at 98,000 sites, providing high-speed connectivity in every state and placing BSNL on par with private operators in delivering nationwide 4G coverage.
The announcement was made in Jharsuguda, Odisha, where PM Modi also introduced several other development projects. The launch came a day after BSNL celebrated its 25th anniversary. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed the successful deployment of 98,000 4G and 5G mobile towers and announced that another 100,000 towers will be added soon to further expand connectivity.
A key highlight of this achievement is that BSNL’s 4G network is built entirely on indigenous technology. Both hardware and software have been developed in India, making the country one of the top five worldwide, alongside Sweden, Denmark, China and South Korea, to build a self-reliant telecom ecosystem. The government has invested ₹37,000 crore in building this network under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
For users, the launch means faster speeds, wider coverage and lower costs. BSNL’s recharge plans are 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than those of private operators, which could attract more than 90 million subscribers and encourage number portability from private players. The improved services are expected to help BSNL regain customer confidence.
Looking ahead, BSNL plans to launch 5G services in metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai by the end of this year. Prime Minister Modi also underlined India’s readiness for 6G, with a target to roll out the technology by 2030, which would place India among the leading countries to deploy the next-generation network.
The rollout of BSNL 4G has been supported by Tata Consultancy Services, which managed network integration, while Tejas Networks developed the radio access system. This collaboration has ensured that the entire project is fully indigenous, reinforcing India’s commitment to technological self-reliance.
