Chinese tech giant Alibaba has launched its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date, Qwen3-Max, which features more than 1 trillion parameters. The announcement was made on Wednesday during the company’s annual conference, highlighting AI as a central part of Alibaba’s future strategy.
Zhou Jingren, Chief Technology Officer at Alibaba Cloud, shared that Qwen3-Max excels in code generation and autonomous agent capabilities. These capabilities allow the AI to make decisions and take actions with minimal human input, moving beyond standard chatbot behaviour. It can work independently toward goals defined by users, reducing the need for constant prompts.
According to Alibaba, Qwen3-Max has outperformed other leading models such as Anthropic’s Claude and DeepSeek-V3.1 in certain performance benchmarks, including Tau2-Bench, a third-party evaluation platform.
Alibaba is increasingly prioritising AI alongside its core e-commerce operations. Earlier this year, the company committed to investing 380 billion yuan, which is approximately 53.40 billion US dollars, in AI infrastructure over the next three years. This move reflects growing competition among Chinese tech firms to build advanced AI systems.
At the same event, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said the company would continue to increase its investments in AI, although he did not provide a specific figure. “The speed of AI industry development has far exceeded our expectations, and the industry’s demand for AI infrastructure has also far exceeded our expectations,” Wu stated.
The release of Qwen3-Max follows the earlier launch of the Qwen 3 model in April. In addition to this, Alibaba also introduced other AI innovations, including Qwen3-Omni, a multimodal and immersive system designed for virtual and artificial reality applications. This model is expected to support technologies such as smart glasses and intelligent cockpit systems.
With these new developments, Alibaba is signalling its strong commitment to staying at the forefront of the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
