Cyber Crime Police Arrest Five in Rourkela for Mule Bank Account Operations

Cyber Crime Police in Sector 7 on Monday arrested five members of an organised crime syndicate in Rourkela for operating mule bank accounts used in money laundering and routing proceeds of cyber crimes.

The accused have been identified as Rahul Roy (30), KP Subham (27), Abhijit Nayak (22), Rohitosh Koila (24) and Ajit Munda (30), all residents of Sector 15, Rourkela.

Deputy SP of Zone 1, Jogeshwar Panda, said the Rourkela-based syndicate was arranging mule bank accounts and renting them out to cyber criminals and money launderers to channel illegal funds. The arrested men allegedly procured SIM cards and opened mule accounts with forged documents in the names of unsuspecting individuals.

Panda added that the investigation will track money trails from these accounts, examine the role of any bank insiders in facilitating the fraudulent openings, and explore links to wider cyber crime networks. Forensic analysis of seized electronic devices is also underway to help dismantle the syndicate.

The five accused were produced in court on Monday and remanded to judicial custody.

This development follows an earlier crackdown on August 12, when the Economic Offences and Cyber Crime wing of Rourkela police arrested 14 people, including Sahil Khuntia (23), a branch manager of Bandhan Bank, and Shilpi Sahu (22), an IDBI Bank agent. Both were accused of aiding a similar organised crime syndicate involved in mule bank account operations.

Authorities said such organised modules provide fake financial identities and hidden channels for fraudulent money transfers, making them a key part of the cyber crime ecosystem.
