The way Artificial Intelligence is being used for content creation in India could soon face stricter regulation. A parliamentary committee has recommended new rules for creators who use AI to produce videos, articles, and images. The two main proposals include a license requirement for creators and mandatory labelling of all AI-generated content.
The Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, has submitted a draft report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The report highlights the urgent need for stronger technological and legal measures to identify and take action against individuals or organisations using AI to spread fake news.
According to the panel, fake news created with AI not only misleads people but also poses a serious threat to public order. The proposed rules aim to ensure that audiences can easily identify AI-generated content through clear labelling, while also making it easier to hold accountable those spreading misinformation.
The recommendations include licensing requirements for creators, which would allow authorities to track and monitor those producing AI-generated content. With proper labelling in place, viewers will be able to distinguish authentic content from AI-produced material, thereby reducing the risks of misinformation.
It is important to note that these recommendations are not yet legally binding. They have been presented to the government as possible measures to curb the growing problem of AI-driven fake news.
For regular content creators, the proposed changes would not prevent them from producing AI-based content. The only adjustment would be the need to label such material as AI-generated. However, the rules are designed to specifically target creators and businesses that misuse AI to intentionally spread false information and profit from it.
If implemented, these measures could significantly reshape how AI is used in India’s digital content ecosystem, balancing innovation with accountability.
