At the age of 58, Malarvizhi Manoharan has built an ice cream brand with an annual turnover of more than ₹1.5 crore, proving how resilience and determination can turn struggles into success.
Born in Bodinayakanur, Tamil Nadu, Malarvizhi grew up in a wealthy family and was married at 15 into another affluent household in Chennai. Life seemed comfortable until her husband’s business collapsed, leaving the young mother of two facing uncertainty and financial hardship.
With no resources left, she sold her gold ornaments and travelled to Udumbanchola in Kerala 37 years ago. All she had there was a 10 acre plot of land and a mud walled hut. Starting from scratch, she began her journey with just one cow. Over time, her herd grew to 12, earning nearly ₹1 lakh a month.
From there, she slowly diversified into different businesses, including cardamom, black pepper, and mushroom farming. She even experimented with aquaponics long before the technique became widely known. Step by step, her efforts expanded and created new income streams.
Three years ago, Malarvizhi launched the Rafeo ice cream brand. Today, the company employs nearly 40 workers. The ice cream is made using milk from native breed cows on her farm and fruits grown on her plantations in Tamil Nadu. The brand has built its primary market in Tamil Nadu, where demand continues to increase.
Her journey, which began with immense personal and financial struggles, has now grown into a thriving brand that supports dozens of workers while delivering a product rooted in local produce. Malarvizhi’s story shows how determination and vision can transform setbacks into lasting achievements.
