Elon Musk has announced a new company named Macrohard that will take direct aim at Microsoft’s software dominance, with artificial intelligence at the core of its operations. The Tesla chief revealed the project in a post on X, describing it as both a playful name and a serious venture.
“It’s a tongue in cheek name, but the project is very real!” Musk wrote, adding, “In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI.”
Documents show that Musk’s AI company filed a trademark application for Macrohard with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on 1 August. The filing outlined a number of AI driven services, including software for generating human like speech and text, as well as tools for creating, coding, and running video games through artificial intelligence.
Musk had already hinted at this move in a post last month, saying that his new AI venture would bring together “hundreds of specialized coding and image/video generation/understanding agents all working together and then emulate humans interacting with the software in virtual machines until the result is excellent.” He went on to describe it as “a macro challenge and a hard problem with stiff competition.”
His relationship with Microsoft and its CEO Satya Nadella has been complicated in recent years. Musk has criticised Microsoft in his legal battle with OpenAI, accusing the company of shifting its mission towards profit. At the same time, he has also engaged with Nadella publicly, including a conversation in May when Grok 3 models were made available on Microsoft’s Azure AI platform.
Recently, Musk also issued a warning that OpenAI could eventually overtake Microsoft, a claim that Nadella responded to calmly. Musk continues to promote his own AI efforts, suggesting that Grok 4 is already more capable than rival models and teasing the release of Grok 5 before the end of the year. Meanwhile, Microsoft remains heavily dependent on OpenAI’s technology to power its Copilot features across Windows, GitHub and web platforms.
