Cyber Fraud Every 20 Minutes: Chhattisgarh Loses Over ₹700 Crore to Cyber Fraud in Two Years

Chhattisgarh is facing a severe surge in cyber fraud, with alarming statistics revealing that the state has lost over ₹700 crore to online scams in just two and a half years. Data indicates that a cyber fraud incident is reported approximately every 20 minutes, highlighting the pervasive nature of these crimes.

According to figures from the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, a staggering 67,389 cyber fraud complaints were filed in Chhattisgarh between January 2023 and June 2025. The cumulative financial loss incurred by victims during this period has reached a massive ₹791 crore.

Raipur, the state capital, has emerged as the epicenter of digital crime, registering over 16,000 cases. However, the rate of recovery for victims remains dismally low, with only 107 complainants receiving refunds – a mere 0.2% of the total reported cases.

The challenges in combating these crimes are further underscored by the low arrest rate. Out of the thousands of complaints, only three bank-related fraud cases have led to arrests, resulting in just seven individuals being jailed. Furthermore, only 21,195 of the 67,389 complaints received have been processed, indicating a significant backlog in investigations.

This escalating trend of cyber fraud poses a serious threat to the financial security of citizens and necessitates urgent and comprehensive measures to enhance cybersecurity infrastructure, improve investigation processes, and raise public awareness to prevent further losses.
