STL and Hygenco Launch Maharashtra’s First Green Hydrogen Plant for Optical Fibre Production

Sterlite Technologies Ltd. (STL) and Hygenco have jointly inaugurated Maharashtra’s first green hydrogen and green oxygen production facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. This pioneering plant is set to supply green hydrogen and oxygen directly to STL’s glass preform manufacturing unit, marking a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices.

This initiative is a crucial component of STL’s ambitious goal to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030. By integrating green hydrogen into its production processes, STL is poised to become the world’s first optical fiber manufacturer to utilize 100% green hydrogen in its operations.

Under the partnership, Hygenco will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the facility, including its construction, ownership, and operation. This arrangement is designed to ensure a consistent, reliable, and commercially viable supply of green hydrogen and oxygen to STL.

“The launch of this facility is a testament to our commitment to sustainable manufacturing and our Net Zero targets,” stated a representative from STL. “By partnering with Hygenco, we are not only embracing cleaner energy but also setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in the optical fiber industry.”

Hygenco also expressed enthusiasm for the project. “We are proud to collaborate with STL on this groundbreaking venture,” said a spokesperson from Hygenco. “This plant demonstrates the feasibility and economic viability of green hydrogen in industrial applications, and we look forward to supporting STL’s journey towards complete sustainability.”

The facility represents a significant leap forward in India’s green energy transition, showcasing how renewable energy sources can be effectively integrated into heavy industrial processes to reduce carbon footprint and promote environmental stewardship.
