Karnataka and Berlin Unite to Boost Startup Exchange and AI Innovation

The Government of Karnataka and the State of Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany, have today signed a Joint Declaration of Intent. This strategic partnership is designed to connect the dynamic innovation ecosystems of Bengaluru and Berlin, promoting extensive startup exchanges and enhancing collaboration in advanced technologies, especially in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The alliance, established under Karnataka’s prominent Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) initiative, aims to minimize the geographical gap between these two global tech centers. It will enable smooth startup exchange programs, offer vital support for businesses entering new markets, and promote deeper technological collaboration across essential sectors.

“This partnership under Karnataka’s Global Innovation Alliance will reduce the distance between Berlin and Bengaluru by enabling startup exchange, soft-landing support and deeper tech and innovation collaboration,” remarked Priyank Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for IT/BT and Rural Development, after the signing ceremony.

The agreement was formalized in the presence of Franziska Giffey, Mayor and Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises, Berlin, who is leading a 25-member trade delegation to Bengaluru and Delhi.

Berlin has pledged to offer comprehensive support services for Indian startups aiming to establish a foothold in the German capital. This includes providing essential seed funding, expert advisory services, networking opportunities with investors, and access to co-working spaces.

Mayor Giffey announced that Berlin intends to open a representative business office in Bengaluru next year. This will be Berlin’s third such office worldwide, following New York and Beijing, aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities between the two regions.

Both governments have highlighted an inclusive approach to innovation, with a particular emphasis on women-led businesses and green innovation.
