The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a pilot road project using Danish Asphalt Fibre Reinforcement Technology, aimed at building stronger and more durable roads.
Roads and Buildings, Infrastructure and Investments Minister BC Janardhan Reddy laid the foundation stone for the project in Sanjamala mandal of Nandyal district on Friday. The project involves constructing a two-lane road between Mudigedu and Sanjamala village using a special mix of bitumen and high-tensile synthetic fibres like aramid and polyolefin. These materials are known to enhance road strength and lifespan.
The minister also visited the technology facility near Ravvalakonda and took part in the fibre mixing process. He said the initiative supports Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s vision of upgrading infrastructure to handle growing transport needs. He noted that with increased industrial activity, trucks are now transporting loads of up to 80 tonnes, which traditional roads are not designed to support.
The advanced technology is expected to lower long-term maintenance costs and make roads more resistant to cracks and potholes. Representatives from the Danish company involved in the project shared that their fibre mix technology has been used at places like Heathrow Airport and Dubai Metro Station, offering improved bitumen flexibility and performance even in extreme conditions.
According to officials, while the construction cost is around ₹25 lakh per kilometre, the reduced maintenance needs make the investment more efficient in the long run. R&B ENC Ramachandra expressed confidence that if the project proves successful, this model could be adopted across the state.
Jose Sebastian, a representative of the Danish firm, said, “We are confident the technology will yield positive results in Andhra Pradesh.”
