In an inspiring demonstration of how AI is reshaping everyday life, a young man in Bengaluru used ChatGPT to navigate a common challenge – negotiating an auto-rickshaw fare – all while overcoming a language barrier.
Captured in a viral video, the student, Sajan Mahto, was struggling to communicate with an auto driver who initially quoted a fare of ₹200. As a student, Mahto was hoping to lower the fare. Instead of dealing with the language barrier, Mahto turned to ChatGPT for help. “Hi ChatGPT, you have to help me in negotiating with the auto driver in Bengaluru. The auto driver is saying that the fare is ₹200 and I am a student. Please negotiate it for ₹100,” he typed.
ChatGPT responded instantly, utilizing its voice assistant feature to converse in Kannada, the local language. The AI smoothly conveyed to the driver, “Anna, this is the route that I travel every day and I am a student. Please come for ₹100.” This clever use of AI resulted in a successful negotiation, bringing the fare down to ₹120.
Despite the initial resistance from the driver, who had quoted ₹200, he agreed to reduce the fare after a brief back-and-forth. “I had said 200 and came down to 150. Since you requested, I reduced another ₹30 and settled at ₹120. It’s not possible for me to go lower,” the driver explained. With the fare settled, Mahto hopped into the auto, grateful for ChatGPT’s assistance.
The viral video has sparked a wave of admiration from netizens, who praised the innovative use of AI. Many commented on how ChatGPT helped resolve the common issue of language barriers for non-Kannada speakers in Bengaluru, a city where Kannada is the predominant language.
One user remarked, “Real use of AI! I appreciate your behaviour.” Another added, “I’ll use this trick with shopkeepers and vendors too!” while a third praised, “AI speaks Kannada so fluently!” Another simply wrote, “Speaking Kannada problem solved.”
This instance is a clear example of how technology can break down communication barriers and bring practical solutions to everyday challenges.
