Hyderabad: The Cybercrime Police in Hyderabad have revealed a significant case of cyber fraud linked to the matrimonial site Shaadi.com. A woman doctor from the city was defrauded of Rs 11 lakh through a fake profile, which also involved threats of extortion and blackmail.
This incident has raised serious questions about the responsibilities of the matrimonial site as an intermediary under Indian cyber laws, according to officials.
The arrested suspect, J Vamshi Krishna, created a false identity and used the platform’s premium service to approach the victim with marriage proposals. He manipulated her into transferring large amounts of money by claiming financial difficulties and later resorted to threats and blackmail using personal information, as stated by a cybercrime official.
Investigations have uncovered similar crimes committed by the suspect across several states, with over 20 cases reported, indicating a systematic abuse of unverified online platforms. Officials noted that the matrimonial site’s premium service misleadingly advertised profiles as ‘verified’ without any real document verification.
Employees shared the suspect’s fraudulent profile without conducting background checks, permitted the transfer of unverified information, allowed contact with victims, and failed to take action after receiving complaints.
The platform’s careless business model, which prioritized profit over safety measures, has enabled numerous frauds. A case has been filed against the matrimonial site under sections of the IT Act and BNS, and the investigation is ongoing.
