Malaysia is set to receive a significant boost to its digital infrastructure, with Google announcing a $15 billion investment between 2027 and 2028. The investment will support the development of data centre campuses, clean energy initiatives, water security and workforce upskilling across the country.

As part of the expansion, Google plans to establish new data centre campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. These will add to its first campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, which is already operational.

“This investment aligns with Malaysia’s development priorities, providing the foundational computing capacity to deliver the upside of innovation across the country while adding local power and water resources as our operations scale,” said Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer at Alphabet and Google.

According to Google, the construction phase is expected to contribute an average of $1.1 billion annually to Malaysia’s GDP and generate more than 37,000 local jobs each year. Once operational, the facilities are projected to support over 9,000 local jobs annually, with average wages expected to be 45% higher than the national median.

The investment will also support Malaysia’s clean energy transition. Google plans to add more than 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to the country’s national grid. The company stated that it will pay for 100% of the electricity consumed by its data centre campuses, along with the direct infrastructure costs required to connect them to the grid, while adhering to all applicable local regulations.

On the efficiency front, Google’s Malaysian campuses are expected to operate at a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.12 to 1.14.

Alongside infrastructure development, Google has announced 4 new programmes focused on workforce development. These initiatives aim to upskill 800,000 Malaysians over the next 5 years.
