Google Gemini introduces shareable AI avatars with user-controlled access

AI-generated content is becoming more personal with Google’s latest Gemini feature, which allows users to create images and videos featuring their own face and voice. Personal avatars can also be shared with friends, family and collaborators, giving them permission to use the same likeness in their creations.

How Gemini personal avatars work

The feature uses Nano Banana for image generation and Gemini Omni for video creation. Users can create content featuring themselves alongside other people, provided those individuals have shared their avatars with them.

Avatar owners can send invitations to recipients through their Gmail addresses. Recipients must accept the invitation before using an avatar. Owners can manage permissions through Gemini settings, set access expiry dates or revoke access at any time.

Once permission is withdrawn, recipients cannot generate new content using that avatar. However, images and videos created earlier remain unaffected.

Availability and requirements

Personal avatars are available to users aged 18 and above with a personal Google Account. The feature currently supports English and is restricted in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

Users also need a Google AI plan to generate videos featuring personal avatars.

How to create and delete an avatar

To create an avatar, users must record their face and voice. They can start the process on a computer, scan a QR code and continue recording on a phone or tablet.

Google recommends recording in a quiet place with good lighting and keeping the face clearly visible throughout the process.

Users can delete their avatars, along with the associated selfie and voice recordings, through their Google Account settings. To use the feature again, they must record a new avatar.

Deleting an avatar does not remove images or videos previously generated or published using it.
