With cyber fraud increasingly targeting vulnerable people, Trichy’s new Police Commissioner, Rupesh Kumar Meena, has announced plans to strengthen the city’s cybercrime unit and step up monitoring of social media platforms to tackle online offences and misinformation.
Meena, who took charge on Wednesday, said the police would study cybercrime patterns and form dedicated teams to identify and arrest suspects involved in online fraud, particularly scams targeting senior citizens.
“We will analyse cybercrime patterns. Teams will be formed to nab the cyber fraud accused. Two-pronged approaches will be taken up to monitor social media platforms. First is to raise awareness among the public; second, we will take stringent action against online offences on social media. Cases will be booked,” the commissioner told reporters.
He also identified tackling drug abuse, improving women’s safety and maintaining law and order as key priorities.
Addressing concerns over traffic congestion, Meena said the police would study vehicular movement across the city. He also said reports of accidents linked to road barricades, which have drawn criticism from road users, would be reviewed.
The commissioner added that proposals to increase police manpower were expected to move forward, although implementation would take time.
“Proposals to strengthen manpower will materialise but it will take some time. Crime-prone areas in the city will be reviewed to strengthen police beats and intensify patrolling in such areas,” he said.
The proposed measures aim to strengthen cybercrime enforcement, improve public awareness, address traffic concerns and increase police presence in crime-prone areas.
