Sony has announced a new Midnight Black version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, with the console set to launch in Japan on 19 November. Priced at 55,000 yen (approximately $350), the model features a black finish but retains the same hardware specifications as the existing Japanese-language PS5 Digital Edition.

The console is exclusive to the Japanese market and comes with regional restrictions. Users must have a PlayStation account set to Japan, and the system supports Japanese as its language. Sony has not confirmed whether the Midnight Black edition will be released in other markets.

Carrying the model number CFI-2200B02S, the console features an 825GB SSD, an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, a 10 TFLOPS AMD RDNA-based GPU and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. It weighs approximately 2.5 kg. The new edition does not offer any hardware or performance upgrades over the existing model.

Sony is also introducing a matching Midnight Black disc drive, priced at 11,980 yen (approximately $76). The accessory allows the Digital Edition console to play physical PS5 games and supported PS4 titles.

Preorders for both products will open in Japan on 20 October, ahead of their scheduled release on 19 November.

The announcement also brings attention to Sony’s previously declared plan to discontinue new physical PlayStation game releases from January 2028. The company first announced the change on 1 July 2026. From January 2028, new PlayStation games will be distributed exclusively in digital formats, including through participating retailers.

However, existing physical games and titles released on disc before January 2028 will remain playable. This means the Midnight Black disc drive will continue to support compatible physical games, even as Sony prepares to end new disc-based game releases.

The console’s launch on 19 November also coincides with the scheduled release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
