With online fraud, phishing and other digital threats becoming more common, a cyber safety awareness programme in Tura on Monday called on citizens to stay alert and use digital services responsibly.
The programme, “Mission Cyber Safe Tura: Empowering Citizens, Building a Secure Digital Future,” was organised by the A·chik Literature Society (ALS) with the Department of Computer Applications, NEHU Tura Campus, West Garo Hills Police and NIC Tura. The programme was sponsored by the State Bank of India.
Held at the District Auditorium, the event brought together government officials, police personnel, academics, teachers, students, senior citizens, NGOs and members of the public to discuss cyber safety and responsible internet use.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma, the chief guest, highlighted the growing prevalence of cybercrime. He urged people to avoid rushing into actions involving unfamiliar links, suspicious messages or unknown online platforms.
SDO (Sadar) Tolino Chishi warned against excessive dependence on the internet and stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced and mindful approach to digital technology.
During the technical session, Dr Arjun Chetry, Assistant Director (IT) at the North Eastern Police Academy, discussed cyber fraud, phishing, cyberbullying, social engineering and identity theft.
NIC Tura District Informatics Officer Elliber Marak focused on cyber hygiene, covering online privacy, protection of personal information and basic digital security.
Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Watre Sangma presented local and regional cybercrime case studies. She highlighted common methods used by cybercriminals and steps people can take to protect themselves.
The sessions were followed by an interactive discussion, where participants raised questions and concerns about cybersecurity and digital safety.
The programme ended with a dance performance by students of Laisvé Dance Studio. Participants also received certificates from the organisers.
