Apple is exploring another generation of its Vision Pro headset, but the project remains in its early stages and may not reach consumers until late 2028 or early 2029.
The company is reportedly developing the new headset under the code name N224 and is examining about 4 design concepts. Some could reduce the headset’s weight by moving computing components to an external device. Others would keep Apple’s all-in-one approach.
The external computing concept is similar to the approach used by Meta in its recently launched VR Glasses. The glasses reportedly weigh one-sixth as much as the Vision Pro and cost one-third of its price.
However, some senior Apple decision-makers reportedly oppose the external puck concept because they believe it could create a poor user experience. The N224 project is described as being on “life support” as Apple considers its next direction, and there is no guarantee that the headset will launch.
Apple’s Vision Pro debuted in February 2024 at nearly $4,000 but has struggled to gain traction. Some Apple retail employees reportedly say stores are lucky to sell 1 unit a month. The company has increasingly promoted the headset for specialist uses such as surgery.
Apple has also shelved several headset projects over the past 2 years. About 2 years ago, it cancelled N107, which would have moved computing to a Mac or another device to reduce headset weight. Around 1 year ago, it shelved N100, a “Vision Air” concept that would have shifted more components to an external pack. N109, another project aimed at creating a lighter and cheaper Vision Pro with a less powerful chip, was also cancelled.
Leadership changes under new CEO John Ternus have further reshaped Apple’s Vision hardware team and added uncertainty around the product’s long-term direction.
For now, Apple is focusing on smart glasses and other wearable products. These include AirPods with camera sensors and a fitness-focused band.
