Internet Explorer’s last remaining presence on modern Windows now has a defined timeline, with Microsoft preparing to end support for Internet Explorer mode in its Edge browser by the end of 2029.
Microsoft is reminding IT administrators that Internet Explorer mode, which allows current versions of Windows to run Internet Explorer’s older rendering engine, will be supported through at least the end of 2029, according to a technology news report.
The notice, posted in the Microsoft 365 admin center under message ID MC1473151, asks organizations that still rely on applications designed specifically for Internet Explorer to begin planning migrations.
Microsoft has said it will announce a final end-of-support date at least 1 year before the change takes effect. The advance notice is intended to give organizations time to rebuild or replace internal software that may take years to migrate.
Internet Explorer mode is a compatibility feature within Edge. While Edge uses Google’s open-source Chromium engine, the mode allows websites to load using Trident, the older rendering engine used by Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft first indicated in 2021 that Internet Explorer mode would eventually be retired.
Organizations that do not depend on Internet Explorer do not need to take any action. Companies that still use it have been advised to identify applications relying on Internet Explorer mode and update or replace them.
The move is part of Microsoft’s longer-term phase-out of Internet Explorer. The company officially retired the standalone Internet Explorer 11 browser in June 2022, 26 years after the browser was introduced with early versions of Windows. Microsoft then began directing users who attempted to open Internet Explorer toward Edge.
Most users had already moved away from Internet Explorer by that time. At its retirement in 2022, the browser accounted for less than 1% of the global browser market, according to StatCounter data from that period.
