Indonesia has joined the international framework against cybercrime by signing the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, strengthening the legal basis for cooperation against cross-border digital crimes and the sharing of electronic evidence.
Foreign Minister Sugiono said the treaty can support Indonesian law enforcement in working with other countries against crimes such as online fraud, online gambling, and child sexual abuse or exploitation materials.
The convention was adopted on December 24, 2024, following discussions that began in 2019. It provides a framework for international cooperation against cybercrime and for exchanging electronic evidence. Indonesia also played a role in drafting the convention, serving as both negotiator and rapporteur through its diplomatic mission in Vienna.
As of September 25, 2026, the convention had 91 signatories and 3 parties. It has not yet entered into force. The treaty will take effect 90 days after 40 member states deposit their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.
Sugiono, who is leading Indonesia’s delegation in New York, said Jakarta is preparing its domestic process to align the treaty with national laws. He is also set to deliver Indonesia’s national statement ahead of the UN General Debate.
Sugiono also addressed peacebuilding, describing it as a long-term commitment that begins with prevention and continues through recovery and reconciliation.
He said each stage should strengthen national institutions and social cohesion. He also highlighted the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), saying it can help countries bring together expertise, political support and resources to turn national peacebuilding priorities into sustained international support.
Sugiono called for stronger strategic guidance from the PBC and closer coordination with the UN General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). He also urged the commission to draw on the experiences of countries, particularly those in the Global South, in reconciliation, institution-building, recovery and prevention.
