Signing in with email-based two-factor authentication could become faster for Gmail users, as Google appears to be rolling out a new shortcut that lets users copy verification codes without opening the email.

The new “Copy code” button is available on Gmail for Android and iOS with the latest app versions. It reportedly appears in Gmail for Android version 2026.09.07.x and Gmail for iOS version 6.0.260907. The shortcut is not currently available on Gmail for the web.

The pill-shaped button appears below the subject line alongside the email preview. Users can tap it to copy a verification code directly to the device clipboard and then paste it into the required app or website.

Previously, users had to open the email, find the one-time password and manually copy the digits before returning to the app or website. The new shortcut reduces these steps for email-based 2FA logins.

Android users already have a similar option for verification codes received through SMS notifications using Google Messages.

Gmail has also received other updates recently, including Live Search and chat features. In July, Google updated the Gemini-powered Help Me Write feature, giving users more control over AI-generated email drafts.

The update allows users to refine existing drafts using their own text instructions instead of relying only on preset editing options. It also introduced undo and redo controls for AI-generated edits.
