A team of 5 schoolgirls from Kent, UK, has developed a wildfire-fighting robot designed to clear dry vegetation and create firebreaks, earning the opportunity to represent Great Britain at the FIRST Global Challenge in Incheon, South Korea.
Team Meglabyte, made up of students aged 14 and 15 from The Folkestone School for Girls, has built an autonomous vehicle with 5-metre folding arms. The robot can clear paths up to 5 metres wide by cutting through dense, dry vegetation that can fuel the spread of wildfires.
The FIRST Global Challenge brings together student teams from more than 190 countries to work on major environmental and technological challenges. This year’s focus is on preventing, controlling and reducing the impact of wildfires.
To make the robot suitable for real-world conditions, the students worked with professionals from Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters shared insights into operating across rugged and uneven terrain, encouraging the team to focus on stability and lightweight construction.
Using standard competition components, the students also programmed the robot for autonomous driving. It can navigate obstacles, clear debris and operate independently in areas where heavy smoke could make remote control difficult.
The achievement comes only 2 years after The Folkestone School for Girls started its robotics club. Despite their limited experience compared with some international teams, Team Meglabyte won the national selection process and secured the only available place for a UK team at the global competition.
The trip to South Korea has also created financial challenges. The team has launched a public crowdfunding campaign to support travel costs and materials, while highlighting its wider goal of encouraging more girls to explore careers in science and technology.
Beyond the competition, the students are developing outreach programmes for primary schools, including coding kits and lesson plans showing how engineering can help address environmental challenges.
Their wildfire-fighting robot will now be tested against teams from across the world in Incheon, combining robotics, environmental problem-solving and STEM education in one ambitious project.
